Step Through Ireland’s Historic Penitentiary, Just 60 Minutes from Your Accommodation at Brielle House.

Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, Ireland

A Sobering Chronicle
of Ireland’s Past

Kilmainham Gaol stands as a powerful testament to Ireland’s journey toward independence. Once a working prison from 1796 to 1924, its stone walls tell the stories of political prisoners, patriots, and everyday inmates. Today, restored cells stretch in long corridors, each echoing with the voices of those who endured confinement here.

The jail became a symbol of national resistance during the 1916 Easter Rising and the War of Independence, housing many key figures before their ultimate fate. Walking these corridors offers an emotional insight into Ireland’s fight for freedom — a place where history is felt as much as it’s learned.

The site’s transformation into a museum allows visitors to access nearly every part of the building. Audio guides and guided tours delve into its complex past, bringing to life the harsh realities of prison life alongside the courage and conviction of its most famous inmates.

This is a lovely self catering accommodation, really cosy, comfortable and very clean.
Ann had left some essentials to start us off such as milk, coffee, cereals which we were grateful for as we didn’t need rush out after a long day travelling. We will definitely be staying again.

We came over from the UK and stayed here for a week in October whilst visiting family and friends in the Midlands. It was a perfect location, near all the places we needed to be and easy to get to from the ferry. Brielle House is a lovely, warm, cosy cottage, well equipped and comfortable.

We needed an overnight spot when attending the Taylor Swift concert in Dublin. The home is Lovely. Beautifully presented, spacious and very clean. Very kind host. Generous milk. Tea. Coffee. Cereals and biscuits left for our use. I have no hesitation recommending this home. It would make a great base if touring the Midlands, etc. Thanks, Anne, of Brielle House Guest Accommodation
